Girls On The Run FAQs

What does Girls on the Run do?

One girl put it this way, "I learned that I am the boss of my brain." Helping girls take charge of their lives and define the future on their terms. You can also think of it as Can University—a place where girls learn that they can. No limits. No constraints. Only opportunities to be remarkable.

How do we play a role in our girls' lives?

Lots of ways, but we start with helping the girls get a better understanding of who they are and what's important to them. Then we look at the role of teams and healthy relationships. And, finally, we explore how girls can positively connect with and shape the world. And remember, we believe that life-changing experiences can be fun too—for everyone—the girls, coaches, families and other volunteers. So don't be surprised when you hear laughter along with self-reflection and see beaming smiles across the beautiful, confident faces of our girls.

There is no team at my daughter's school - can she still participate?

Yes! Most of our teams are open to the community, even if they take place at a different school than your daughter attends. View our team locations. No team near you? Consider starting a team at your daughter's school - find out how

How do I get a team started at my daughter's school?

View our New Site Application here! Basically, you need space (to run and for activities - can be a school, park, community center, etc), approval (from school or site administration) and people (2-3 coaches to lead practices and a Site Liaison to coordinate the team). We provide the rest, and we'll help guide you through the application process if you have questions! Contact us  with questions.

What does it cost to participate?

Approximately $160. The actual out-of-pocket cost to the Girls on the Run program is approximately $240 per girl, but due to the generosity of grantors and donors, Girls on the Run Saginaw Bay is able to offer the program for $160 per girl for the twice per week, ten-week program. Families that have the ability to and are interested in supporting the program beyond the $160 may choose to sponsor additional girls as well.

The cost is reflective of the quality of the program and what your child will receive. The  program fee includes:

  • 20 lessons conducted by  certified Girls on the Run coaches (30 hrs of instruction)
  • a new pair of running shoes
  • official Girls on the Run T-shirt
  • a healthy snack at each practice
  • lesson supplies and handouts
  • participation/registration & entry in the Girls on the Run 5K
  • a 5K finisher's medallion

I can't afford the program fees - can my daughter still participate?

Yes! A family that can afford to pay $160 is asked to pay the full amount. We will never turn away a girl for an inability to pay the full fee. Fees are adjusted from $10-$160 based on financial need. Girls participate equally in the program regardless of the fee their family selects. A registration fee scale is provided for families to choose what they can afford based on parental income and family size. Additional assistance is also available based on families' needs. Local fundraising efforts and donations help to bridge the gap between program fees paid and necessary sponsorship.

It looks like your season has already started - can my daughter still participate?

Due to the experiential nature of the program and the way that lessons and relationships build from one to the next, we can only accept new team members through the first week of sessions. You will need to contact the Girls on the Run office at 989-399-0007 ext. 104 for instructions. If your girl is unable to participate this year, you are welcome to join us for our Girls on the Run 2015 5K - it's open to the community! And, please sign-up for our mailing list so that you receive notification before registration opens next season.

Can program fees be refunded?

The girl’s parent/guardian (not the coach) is responsible for contacting Girls on the Run if their daughter is unable to continue the program. Program fees cannot be refunded after the first week of sessions is complete. All refunds are subject to a $10 processing fee. You will need to contact the Girls on the Run office at 989-399-0007 ext. 104 for instructions on how to obtain a refund.

How do I sign up to coach a Girls on the Run team?

I don't have any experience - can I still coach?

We provide training, detailed practice plans, and an awesome coaching team to ensure you have all the support you need. Complete a New Coach Application now!

It looks like your season has already started - can I still coach?

While we do not accept coach applications once the season has begun, you can still sign up to be a Practice Partner! Practice Partners coordinate with the head coach to attend sessions as their schedule allows. They assist the coaches as needed and serve as running buddies to help motivate and encourage the girls. Practice Partners do not need to attend training but will need to have a brief phone interview/information session with our council director and submit to a background check.  Contact us for more information!

I want to volunteer, but I don't have time to coach - what's the best way get involved?

We have many volunteer opportunities other than coaching - join us as a Running Buddy, Practice Partner, committee member, special event volunteer, or to help prep materials for our season. Contact us  if you’re interested in learning more!

Simple, engaging and extraordinary. The result? Healthy, confident girls who can.
